Stable Fees, Infinite Scale with Matt Sorg, VP of Technology at Solana Foundation
Hey, it’s Marc. ✌️
“Solana’s built to be the internet’s capital market fast, decentralized, and ready for the future.”
We sat down with Matt Sorg, VP of Technology at Solana Foundation, for an insightful look into why Solana’s high-speed, low-cost blockchain is redefining how value moves globally.
From his days leading AI at Unity to steering Solana’s tech vision, Matt’s journey reflects the cutting edge of blockchain innovation. Now, he’s helping Solana power everything from meme coins to institutional assets, with AI and quantum security on the horizon.
We talked about:
- Solana’s core philosophy: "Increased Bandwidth, Reduced Latency."
- Why it’s the go-to for DeFi, NFTs, and DePIN
- How Solana outpaces traditional finance
- Preparing for a quantum-secure future
- AI’s growing role in blockchain
… and much more.
Here are our key insights & take-aways.
The Solana advantage
Matt keeps it real about Solana’s edge:
“Solana delivers internet-scale capital markets, moving value faster than anything out there.”
Unlike traditional systems like Visa, which settle daily, Solana’s near-instant transactions let businesses scale at the speed of the internet. Think digital startups buying AI compute or tokenizing assets, Solana’s low fees and high throughput make it a no-brainer for innovators.
Matt explained how Solana’s ecosystem thrives:
“From meme coins to DePIN projects like HiveMapper, Solana’s culture of rapid iteration attracts devs who want to build fast and big.”
Take HiveMapper, it’s collecting live mapping data for Lyft and Volkswagen, powering AI-driven navigation. This is Solana’s playbook: real-world utility, global reach, and a platform where anyone can innovate without permission.
The philosophy that wins
Matt’s thesis is simple but bold: Solana’s built from the ground up for performance, not dogma:
“We didn’t pin ourselves to Bitcoin or Ethereum.
We asked: what’s the best system for a new internet layer?”
While other chains plan massive “2.0” rebrands, Solana’s culture is one of constant, iterative improvement. Matt calls it their core ethos: IBRL, or "Increased Bandwidth, Reduced Latency."
"It is much more about just good engineering of constant iteration and constant improvements... our releases are very frequent, you know, they're every few months, not years."
This isn't just about speed for speed's sake. This philosophy creates a predictable, high-performance environment that attracts a certain type of builder. It’s why new trends, from DeFi and NFTs to DePIN and memecoins, often find a home on Solana first.
The real strategic insight? Stable fees.
"If one adjacent industry starts doing well, it prices out other industries at that time. But that doesn't happen on Solana."
Because the network has sufficient capacity, a memecoin frenzy doesn't kill the business model for a fledgling payments app. This creates a resilient, diverse ecosystem where multiple industries can grow at once without cannibalizing each other's blockspace.
Why businesses choose Solana
Solana's rapid adoption across various sectors is a cultural phenomenon, not a top-down mandate. The ecosystem's speed and efficiency attract developers focused on rapid iteration and product execution.
- Attracting the Builders: Businesses in new waves of innovation, from meme coins and NFTs to DeFi and DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks), have chosen Solana because its culture and tools support rapid product development and success.
- Low and Stable Fees: A key competitive advantage is the platform's capacity and cost structure. Even when one industry (like meme coins) experiences explosive growth, it doesn't price out other nascent businesses because the median fees remain low and stable.
- Platform Simplicity for Diverse Users: The platform's commitment to security, stability, and performance serves both the high-frequency "degen" trader and the security-minded institutional user with high-value use cases like Real World Assets (RWA).
AI and Quantum Risk
Solana is actively preparing for the rise of AI and guarding against future quantum threats:
- AI is already infrastructure: On Solana, AI isn’t just hype — it’s plugging into real rails. DePIN projects like Hivemapper feed AI models with live mapping data, while AI tools make it faster and easier for developers to ship apps by cutting through messy docs.
- Quantum is an engineering problem, not an existential one: The way forward is simple: more performant systems = more room for quantum-secure cryptography. Solana is already retooling addresses and signatures to make the network quantum-proof.
- Privacy is a feature, not a constraint: Solana’s efficiency lets it stack advanced privacy layers on top: from confidential balances to private computation via TEEs. The faster the chain, the heavier the crypto it can carry.
The endgame
This is where the vision gets really big. Matt outlined a tech roadmap that goes far beyond competing with other blockchains. The target is centralised finance itself.
A major upcoming upgrade, "Multiple Concurrent Leaders," is designed to allow block builders around the world to produce blocks simultaneously.
What does that mean in simple terms?
"If I'm in Tokyo... I can have my local block builder include that transaction in microseconds. And same can be true for somebody in New York... you get inclusion assurances from their local validator in those microseconds and still have it be synced to this global market."
This is a fundamental shift. For the first time, a decentralised network could offer inclusion guarantees and performance that a centralised system, like NASDAQ, physically cannot provide to a global user base.
Key takeaways
Here are the key strategic takeaways from our conversation with Matt Sorg:
- Performance is a culture: Solana's relentless focus on IBRL creates a flywheel. A high-performance chain attracts high-performance builders, who in turn build high-performance apps, demanding ever more from the core protocol.
- Solana’s speed scales everything: Its high-throughput, low-cost design powers diverse use cases, from meme coins to institutional tokenization, outpacing slow legacy systems.
- The next upgrade is about physics: The goal isn’t just to be a faster blockchain, but to build a global state machine that can offer performance and inclusion guarantees superior to centralised alternatives. The vision is to make decentralisation a performance advantage.
- AI will use the path of least friction: Matt's take on AI is purely functional. In the future, AI agents tasked with executing financial strategies will automatically route value through the most efficient, liquid, and lowest-cost rails. The goal is to make Solana that rail, future-proofing with AI-friendly infrastructure.
That’s it for now.
Take care,
Marc
