Hollywood's New Star: Artificial Intelligence

Today we’re going to untangle how AI is transforming Hollywood and the filmmaking industry. Hint: The disruption is massive.  

Let’s jump in.

Zooming in: Several prominent studios and companies in Hollywood are increasingly utilizing AI tools to generate trailers and other content.

  • Scriptwriting and Pre-production: Studios like 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. have used AI to analyze scripts, assist in casting, and predict film success.
  • Filmmaking and Visual Effects: Marvel Studios and Disney have used AI for facial capture, visual effects, automated editing, and creating dynamic backgrounds and sequences. 
  • Trailers: Warner Bros., Morgan Movie, and 20th Century Fox have used AI tools to streamline the creation of movie trailers and enhance visual effects in films like The Flash.
  • Distribution and Marketing: Streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu and studios are using AI to give audiences personalized shows and ads.

Example: A new political biopic titled Putin from Polish director Besaleel uses AI to recreate Vladimir Putin's face on an actor with a similar build with the help of AIO

Zooming out: Over the past 30 years, technology has transformed Hollywood. In the 1990s,computer-generated imagery (CGI) revolutionized visual effects in films like "Jurassic Park." The 2000s saw digital tools enhance filmmaking in animation (e.g. Pixar), sound, and editing, while social media changed audience engagement and marketing. The 2010s introduced big data for tailoring content to audience preferences. 

Why it matters: AI brings a new form of storytelling with interactive narratives, branching storylines, and even immersive VR/AR experiences. It can transform the industry with personalized experiences with real-time reactions and viewing preferences. Moreover, GenAI is emerging as a powerful tool for content optimization for global audiences, but studios are keeping AI strategies confidential.

The Big Concerns:

  • Tyler Perry halted his $800M Atlanta studio expansion due to the rapid advancements of OpenAI's text-to-video model Sora, fearing job losses and industry changes.
  • Netflix added generative AI to its list of risk factors, warning it could impact competition and intellectual property.
  • Several films, including "Late Night With the Devil" and "Civil War," have sparked controversy for using AI-generated visuals, raising concerns about job displacement and ethical implications in Hollywood.

Stepping back: The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike involved over 11,500 screenwriters demanding fair compensation, improved working conditions, and regulations on AI use in scriptwriting from major studios and streaming platforms. The 148-day strike significantly impacted film and television production and brought renewed attention to the challenges faced by writers in the digital age.

By the numbers:

  • 93% of Hollywood industry professionals believe that AI will become an important tool in film creation, distribution, and promotion processes.
  • Approximately 80% of Hollywood studios utilize AI to predict movie performance before release.
  • The use of AI in content creation in the film industry is expected to increase by 75% by 2025.
  • Movie production costs may decrease by 10% within five years, causing widespread job losses and studio closures.
  • In the survey, 27% ranked AI regulation as a top priority, while 33% saw it as important but less urgent, placing it 11th among 15 priorities.

The big picture: AI-powered tools can not only help in content creation and production but also in analyzing audience behavior and identifying demographics with personalized recommendations and optimal product placement opportunities. However, it raises concerns about job loss, creative control, intellectual property, and ethical use.

Money moves: Thrive Capital invested $75M in A24, valuing the film studio at $3.5B. This strategic move signals growing interest in AI's potential to transform Hollywood, with Thrive Capital founder Josh Kushner joining A24's board to leverage AI for filmmaking and content.

Devil’s Advocate: The technology is getting more sophisticated at an alarming speed. The computational power of neural networks is doubling every 5.7 months,, raising concerns about misinformation, identity theft, and the erosion of trust in media. Recently, a deepfake video falsely depicting Joe Biden using offensive language has gone viral, highlighting the potential impact of manipulated media in political contexts.

So what?

AI is becoming an integral part of Hollywood, offering both opportunities and challenges.

The technology is advanced and powerful, but the important question here is: are people ready to adopt it?

People love AI until it costs them their job. The consensus among industry professionals and the public is that there is a need for government regulation of AI.

Last week, the Coalition for Secure AI (CoSAI was launched by OASIS and backed by tech giants like Google and Microsoft, aiming to create open-source tools and standardized practices to enhance AI security.

However, there is still a long way to go in establishing clear guidelines and regulations for the ethical and responsible use of AI in the entertainment industry.
